Advisory Board

Boston University, as part of an effort to develop the nation's finest online program in Financial Planning, has formed an advisory board comprised of thought, education and industry leaders to help us review and improve the quality of the program.

The Advisory Board is composed of a wide cross section of thought and education leaders who will review and critique the quality of the Program.

The Advisory Board includes:

Robert Clark
Robert Clark is widely considered one of the foremost observers of the independent advisor industry. Most recently, he served as editor-in-chief of MorningstarAdvisor.com, a comprehensive portal website launched in July 2000, boasting 45,000 registered users by the end of that year.

Clark began his career in 1983 as a freelance writer for Financial Planning Magazine, at that time, the leading publication for financial advisors. As senior editor, he covered all facets of the advisor world, from broker/dealers to insurance to investments, and as editor-in-chief from 1988 - 1990, he directed that publication to $4 million in revenues and a 25% profit margin.

In 1990, he became senior editor on the staff of what was to become Fidelity Investment’s Worth Magazine.In his five-year tenure at Worth, the magazine grew to a circulation of 750,000. Clark created and edited the Advisor section of the magazine, and created features such as the Worth Guide to Mutual Funds, The Best Financial Advisors in America, and the Worth Guide to Private Banking. Bob also became the magazine’s spokesman with appearances on the "Today Show", CNN, PBS, and a weekly show on CNBC.

Clark left Worth in 1995 to become editor-in-chief of Dow Jones Investment Advisor Magazine. By the time he left in 2000, the magazine’s circulation had increased from 60,000 to 75,000 advisors, and revenues grew from $3 million to $8 million a year. He also created and hosted the Portfolio Management Symposium, which generated over $750,000 in revenues and attracted over 800 advisors a year.

Clark is a frequent speaker at advisor industry conferences on such topics as the future of financial advice, lessons from the most successful advisory practices, and how to market an asset management business.

Hy Cohen
HyCohen, formerly Chairman and CEO of Royal Alliance Associates, Inc., New York, New York, was named President and COO in 1992 and continued until his appointment to Chairman in 2000. Royal Alliance is a wholly owned subsidiary of SunAmericaInc./American International Group (NYSE:AIG). As Chairman of Royal Alliance, Cohen was responsible for all activities of one of the largest full service national independent broker/dealers, overseeing a 3,000 representative field force with sales in excess of $13 billion. Additionally, he was responsible for strategic planning and the development of new products, services, and technology as well as quality growth of the field force.

Prior to joining Royal Alliance, Cohen was at Integrated Resources, Inc., from 1981-1990, where he was Regional Vice President for Marketing from 1986-1990, selling packaged products in the Northeast. His ability to understand consumer behavior coupled with the regulatory environment, particularly at the point of sale, accounted for his success in that position.

Cohen made the transition to sales from a career grounded in finance. At Integrated Resources, he was Chief Financial Officer & First Vice President (financial and operations principal for the broker-dealers) from 1983-1985 and Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer, Equipment Leasing from 1981-1983. He was an Audit Manager from 1977-1981 at Touche Ross & Co. and at Eisner & Lubin, CPAs, from 1973-1977.

As a CFO of Integrated Resources, Cohen had direct involvement in all financial and regulatory matters of two broker/dealers and investment advisory subsidiaries. He participated directly with the development of the mutual fund and private account business from a structural as well as distribution point of view in order to determine necessary critical mass.

The road to Chairman of Royal Alliance began for Hy Cohen 55 years ago in Brooklyn, New York .He attended New York City Public Schools, Brooklyn College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, and Pace University, where he did graduate study in taxation. He has been licensed as a Certified Public Accountant since 1975 and holds Series 7, 24, 27, and 63 licenses from the NASD. Cohen served active duty in the military from 1966-1968 and was awarded an honorable discharged.

While a resident of Marlboro, New Jersey, with his wife and two children, Cohen found time to be involved in his community. He served six years on the Marlboro Board of Education and three years on its Planning Board. He was also President of the Banking and Finance Chapter of the New York B’nai B'rith and still serves on its Board of Directors.

Peter Cummins
Peter Cummins is one of the earliest pioneers in the development of variable annuities for individuals, a product that was to have a profound positive effect upon the insurance industry and the retirement savings habits of Americans. During his tenure at Connecticut General Life Insurance, from 1970 - 1976, Cummins’ primary work was the development of the annuity line of business. During these years he was active in industry matters with The Life Insurance Marketing Research Association, serving as Chairman of The Equity Products Committee. His work there also involved the creation of the first insurance company-sponsored mutual fund family. At the time of his leaving Connecticut General, his title was Treasurer of Connecticut General Equity Sales Company and Product Manager of Variable Annuities.

From 1976 - 2002, he had a successful career at The Hartford Financial Services Group. The main thrust of his efforts was in the direction of the variable annuity business with emphasis on sales and marketing. The variable annuity business grew into a $15 billion annual line with assets of over $100 billion at the end of 2001. The Hartford Life has been the leading company in this business since 1993. In 1995, The Hartford Life introduced its very successful mutual fund family, which is now producing over $6 billion in sales annually.

During his years at The Hartford, Cummins was involved in industry activities as Chairman of the Marketing Committee of the National Association of Variable Annuities, a member of the board of directors of The Forum for Investor Advice, and worked with the SEC on industry matters. In 1996, Cummins was the winner of the Harold Geneen Award for Management. He retired from The Hartford in 2002 as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

A resident of Old Lyme, CT, Mr. Cummins earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, before he went to business school. Mr. Cummins is married with three children. His hobbies include golfing, fishing, boating, reading, and traveling.

Herbert K. Daroff, J.D., CFP
Herb is an attorney by education and very proud to be a financial planner by profession. He heads up Estate and Business Planning for Baystate Financial Services in Boston where he provides custom case design and is also available on a consultation basis. Herb has been actively involved in the financial services industry since 1973. He moved to the Boston area in 1981 where he resides with his wife and three children.

Mr. Daroff graduated from Drexel University with a B.S. in Commerce and Engineering in 1975, and Temple University - School of Law with a J.D. in 1979.

Herb is very active in volunteer efforts in his community and the financial services industry. He is Past President of the Greater Boston Chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP, now the Financial Planning Association, FPA) and served as a member of the national IAFP Ethics Committee and the Board of Practice Standards and Board of Professional Review for the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. He currently serves as an officer of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP) in Boston.

Herb’s creativity, experience, and resourcefulness enable him to work very well with clients and their professional advisory team in order to implement responsive solutions for financial objectives.

Herb is contributing editor for LIFE & Health Advisor. He has been quoted in several financial industry publications including Financial Planning, Investment Advisor, and Ticker and his work has appeared in the Boston Globe. His areas of case design and seminar specialty include:

Roy T. Diliberto
Roy T. Diliberto is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of RTD Financial Advisors, Inc. A graduate of Temple University, Mr. Diliberto has received his Chartered Financial Consultant designation from the American College, and his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation from the College for Financial Planning.

Mr. Diliberto has been quoted in many national and local publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Philadelphia Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and The LA Times. Recently, he was chosen by Mutual Fund Magazine as one of 100 Great Financial Planners in the United States. He is one of only 29 people named by both Money and Worth magazines as one of the 200 best Financial Advisors in America and was chosen as one of "The 120 Best Financial Planners for Doctors" by Medical Economics. Accounting Today named him "One of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the Profession". He has appeared on national television programs such as "The NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw", "CNN Moneytalk", "Fox on Money", "Up to the Minute" on CBS and "Business Center" on CNBC. He has also been featured on ABCNEWS.COM and CNNFN.

Active in professional and civic associations, Mr. Diliberto has served as National Chairman of the Financial Planning Association. He was on the Advisory Board of Schwab Institutional and is currently a member of the TD Waterhouse Advisory Panel. Mr. Diliberto currently serves on the Boston University Advisory Board for Financial Planners. He is a member of the Temple University Planned Giving Advisory Council and the Temple Owl Club Board of Directors. He also writes a bimonthly column on Financial Life Planning for The Journal of Financial Planning.

Whether Mr. Diliberto is working with business owners, professionals, or other high net worth individuals, all of his clients have one thing in common: the desire to pursue their goals and dreams and have an experienced professional help them to make smart financial decisions.

John Ebersole
As the Associate Provost of the Division of Extended Education and Dean of Division of Extended Education at Boston University, John Ebersole oversees the ten-unit Division of Extended Education which includes Metropolitan College, the School of Hospitality Administration, Summer Term, and the University’s various outreach, continuing, and professional education programs. He serves as the Chair of the University Committee on Intellectual Property and oversees the development and management of a national network of BU affiliates. Prior to his position as Associate Provost and Dean, Ebersole was the Dean of Boston University’s Metropolitan College where he provided leadership to six academic departments and their faculty, oversaw the University’s outreach and non-credit programs, including its award-winning Corporate Education Center, and off-campus distance education. He was also a faculty member for the Department of Administrative Sciences.

Ebersole’s experience in higher education is extensive. At Colorado State University, he served as associate provost and professor of management. At the University of California, Berkeley, he held the multiple positions of Assistant Dean, UC Extension, Director of Strategic Initiatives, Director of Berkeley Worldwide, and Department Chair in Continuing Education for Business & Management. In addition to his deanship at John F. Kennedy University’s School of Management, Ebersole was an executive vice-president of Marsh and Company, a San Francisco-based investment firm specializing in start-up funding and management. He also held increasingly responsible positions with the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring at the rank of Commander.

Among his numerous professional affiliations, Ebersole is currently the President of the University Continuing Education Association and a member of the Board of Directors and Chair, Academic Standards Committee, of the New England College of Finance. He is a candidate for a Doctorate of Education in Executive Leadership at George Washington University, and he holds several master’s degrees including an MPA in Administration and an MBA in International Business from John F. Kennedy University.

Robert J. Glovsky
Robert J. Glovsky is the President of Mintz Levin Financial Advisors, LLC, which was founded in October 1998 to provide financial planning and investment advisory services to individuals and families. Mintz Levin Financial Advisors counsels clients on asset allocation and investment strategies and offers comprehensive, customized investment advisory and financial planning services.

Glovsky is a practicing financial planner with more than 20 years of experience. Before forming Mintz Levin Financial Advisors, he was a Principal of one of New England’s largest fee-only financial planning practices. With broad-based experience in financial planning, individual tax planning, and money management, Glovsky’s particular focus is on asset allocation and investment strategies.

Glovsky is the Director Emeritus of Boston University’s Program for Financial Planners, the largest CFP Board-Registered Program in New England and one of the largest in the country. He also served as Chair of the Board of Examiners of the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards, which sets standards for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals worldwide. He has lectured and taught lawyers, accountants, and educators and has spoken extensively throughout the country on financial planning topics. He has also served as a financial planning expert in the development of a financial planning software product.

Recently, Glovsky was listed on the Mutual Fund Magazine’s “Nation’s Top 100 Financial Planners.” Worth Magazine has selected Glovsky as one of the “Best Financial Advisors in the Country” for each of the past five years; in addition, he was profiled nationally in Financial Planning Magazine which named him as one of the “Ten Best Star Planners.” He is widely renowned for his financial expertise and is currently the host of “Bob Glovsky -The Money Expert,” airing five days a week on Business 1060AM WBIX. His views were also showcased for over eight years when he served as co-host of “The Money Experts” on Boston radio and of “The Financial Planners” on MediaOne cable television stations. Glovsky has also appeared on CNBC, local Boston PBS, ABC, CBS, and NBC stations, and on New England Cable News.

In the print media, Glovsky’s expertise is widely recognized. He has been a professional advisor to the Boston Herald “Money Manager” Column and a contributor to the Boston Business Journal and Massachusetts Lawyer’s Weekly. He is regularly quoted in publications including Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe,and The Boston Herald.

Glovsky received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and both his J D and a Master’s degree in Taxation from Boston University School of Law. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner, Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).

Keith F. Hartstein
Keith Hartstein joined John Hancock Funds in September of 1990 and currently serves as executive vice president of retail sales and marketing and a member of John Hancock Funds’ executive committee. Mr. Hartstein is responsible for all aspects of the distribution and marketing of John Hancock Funds’ open-end and closed-end mutual funds.

Mr. Hartstein became Chairman of the Investment Company Institute (ICI) Sales Force Marketing Committee in September of 2003, and was nominated for Institutional Investor Newsletter Group’s Fund Marketer of the Year in 2001. He has been involved directly or indirectly with the securities industry since 1982, including a 10-year stretch as a mutual fund wholesaler calling on financial professionals, first in the Pacific Northwest and later in the Southeastern U.S.

Mr. Hartstein received a B.A. in journalism from Louisiana State University in 1978 and has completed the Securities Industry Institute program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the Executive Integral Leadership Program at Notre Dame.

Susan Hirshman
Susan Hirshman is a Vice President and Planning Strategist at JPMorgan Fleming Asset Management for financial advisors serving affluent clients. Ms. Hirshman is responsible for developing strategies to provide wealth solutions to the affluent market. She is primarily focused on JPMorgan Fleming's intermediary client base, which includes financial advisors, broker/dealers and insurance companies.

Ms. Hirshman began her career as a CPA specializing in taxation of high net worth individuals. Prior to joining JPMorgan, Ms. Hirshman was a senior manager at KPMG LLP specializing in personal financial planning and investment consulting for high net worth individuals, corporate executives, foundations, endowments, defined benefit and defined contribution plans.

Ms. Hirshman joined JPMorgan Private Bank in 1999 prior to her new role with JPMorgan Funds.

In addition to earning her M.B.A. at Baruch College in New York City, Ms. Hirshman is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Life Underwriter and a Chartered Financial Analyst.

As chair of the community volunteer committee for JPMorgan’s Chase Women’s Interactive Network, Ms. Hirshman shares her commitment to the community by playing an important role in the coordination of the firm’s volunteer activities.

Ms. Hirshman has been featured in a number of financial publications and recently appeared on CNBC’s Power Lunch to discuss issues surrounding college planning.

Karen Mineo
Karen Mineo has been with Merrill Lynch & Co. for 19 years and is presently a Vice President working in the Producer Training Group.  Karen is responsible for the design and development of intranet web-based courses for Financial Advisors and curriculum design for initial training and advanced advisors, a population of over 13,000.  She is responsible for continuing education, including the needs analyses for the advisors, client associates and managers; curriculum design and development for online and classroom programs; and creating the master training plan.  She is responsible for the internal Certified Financial Manager (CFM) program and is a resource for the field for all of the professional designations approved for use by the Financial Advisors, including CFP certification.  She served on the SIA Continuing Education Committee for 4 years and as the National Chair of the committee for 2 of those years. She has her BS from Cornell University and her Masters in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation from Syracuse University.

John O. Myers
As Chief Executive Officer and Director of Retail Sales for HSBC Asset Management (Americas) Inc., John Myers has led the organization over the last three years from $2.5 billion to $22 billion of assets and from break-even to $23 million of profit, through organic growth and acquisition. Myers established and led the retail distribution organization from Number Ten to Number One vendor in its primary distribution channel and from a 2% to 25% market share. He further integrated the HSBC Bank Trust Department into HSBC Asset Management, providing consistency and transparency, and combined the support functions of the U S bank and global HSBC to achieve economies and efficiency.

Prior to HSBC, Myers was Senior Vice President at Transamerica Life Companies. As head of distribution for the bank and broker dealer channels, he increased annuity sales from $450 million to $1 billion annually. At BankAmerica Investment Services, the registered broker/dealer for Bank of America, Myers was chief executive officer, managed registered rep sales force of 500, and generated $1.7 billion annual sales and $100 million profit.

During 10 years as a senior vice president at Colonial Management Associates, Myers established and led the bank distribution channel to achieve sales of $100 million /month, reprresenting 30% of total sales, and built the financial planner/insurance agent channel to achieve 15% of total sales.

Myers' experience includes institutional sales both for Colonial and as a third party marketer on behalf of ForstmannLittle, Daiwa Capital Management, and Julius Baer Bank. He also was in the computer systems business with Hewlett Packard for financial services applications.

As a Lieutenant j g in the U S Navy, Myers served on board a Destroyer Escort.
He holds an M B A from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B A from Dartmouth College. Myers is married with six children and lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Paul P. Saitta
Paul Saitta is Senior Vice President and National Sales Director for Quick and Reilly, Inc. He joined Quick and Reilly, Inc. in 1987 and started his financial services career with the firm as an intern in Boston MA, and as a branch manager trainee in downtown New York City.

Saitta has worked within the firm’s branch system as a top-producing personal broker and top-producing branch manager. In 1995, Saitta accepted the position of director of all Fixed Income, Packaged Products, Mutual Funds, and Annuity Distribution. In 1996, he was given the title of vice president and director of Financial Products, Services, and Sales. He currently oversees a multi-channel sales distribution network including a nationwide Investor Center network.

Saitta has worked with the Security Industry Foundation for Economic Education as a trainer/facilitator and has received the Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor designation from the College for Financial Planning in Denver, CO. He previously served on an advisory council for the Institute for Wealth Management to aid in the delivery of wealth management courses and designations within the securities industry.

Saitta resided on the Securities Industry Association Institute’s Participant Advisory Council at the Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from the Institute’s three-year program in 1998. Currently a member of the SIA Sales and Marketing Committee, he holds an undergraduate degree in Public Administration from Stonehill College in North Easton, MA. Saitta resides in Duxbury, MA, with his wife and five children.

Jack Sharry
Jack Sharry is president of the Private Client Group at Phoenix Investment Partners, a $50 billion-plus investment management firm. He is responsible for the distribution of Phoenix mutual funds, managed accounts, and retirement planning products through all retail channels and is a member of the firm’s management committee. Before joining Phoenix Investment Partners in 1995, Sharry was a managing director of Putnam Investments. While at that firm from 1992 - 1995, he was director of retail marketing and earlier was the director and national sales manager of Putnam’s broker/dealer division. He was also a member of Putnam’s executive committee. Sharry was at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter between 1985 and 1992 where, in his last assignment, he was first vice president and national sales manager of its insurance/annuity division.

Sharry serves on the board of governors for The Money Management Institute (MMI), the national organization for the managed account industry, which represents portfolio manager firms and sponsors of investment consulting programs.

Sharry graduated from the University of Connecticut, where he received a B A in English.

Richard Sincere
Richard Sincere, President and CEO of Sincere & Co., LLC, founded the firm in 1997. Sincere & Co. is an independently-owned marketing and distribution company that exclusively serves the independent RIA community. The mission of the firm is to provide marketing and sales support for quality institutional firms for the RIA community.

Prior to starting the firm, Sincere was Senior Vice President of Fidelity Investment Advisor Group (FIAG), a division of Fidelity Investments. In 1994, he joined National Westminster Bank as a Senior Vice President of NatWest Brokerage, after serving over 10 years in strategic marketing and sales positions for Citibank/Citicorp, including Regional Vice President of Citicorp Investment. He has also held
positions at AON Corporation (formerly Ryan Insurance) and PepsiCo.

Sincere earned his Master of Management degree in 1983 from Northwestern
University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

To keep abreast of the independent RIAs' expanding and changing needs, Sincere works closely with professional associations such as the Financial Planning Association (FPA), National Association of Financial Planners (NAPFA), and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He currently serves on the following committees/boards:

J. Heywood E. Sloan
Heywood Sloane is a national authority in the bank, securities and mutual fund businesses, and is a Principal of DSG. He combines executive and line management experience in the banking, securities, mutual fund, information and publishing industries into an unique global perspective that spans investment, marketing, media, systems and information management disciplines.

Mr. Sloane also works closely with the Bank Insurance & Securities Association and was instrumental in the merger of two predecessor associations, the BSA and the FIIA. As Managing Director of the BISA, he works with members and Board committees in a number of capacities. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the BISM-OnLine and the Bank Securities Industry Registry and is in constant contact with the strategic, tactical, business and marketing issues facing the bank, securities and insurance firms as they converge into the new financial services industry.

Prior to becoming a principal of DSG, Mr. Sloane was General Manager and Director of Institutional Markets for Wiesenberger, a major mutual fund information company. He merged two pre-existing information companies and increased the size and scope of the merged business to include variable annuity and closed end fund databases and software. He also directed the redesign and development of a state of the art software and on-line research and sales systems. While at Wiesenberger he created the Hysales/Investment View software system, a performance measurement, hypotheticals, and asset allocation system.

From 1981 to 1991, he was a Vice President with Delaware Group working with the chairman and president on a variety of strategic initiatives. There he was responsible for product management, retirement plans, and marketing. He was also a Founding Director of Delaware Management Trust Company. During this time he developed and introduced over 20 various types of domestic and international mutual funds, the industry’s first "class of shares structure" for a long term fund, a variable insurance product line, as well as unique and successful hybrids of deposit, transaction, credit and securities products. He was instrumental in the migration of both the transfer agency and retirement plan processing systems to new platforms.

Previously, Mr. Sloane held various positions of increasing responsibility with The Philadelphia National Bank in the commercial and international areas where his responsibilities included: developing the Credit Products Management discipline for the commercial banking group, major systems development, and instituting a Non-Credit Product function across the entire Commercial & International Banking Group.

Mr. Sloane has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Haverford College and a Masters in Management from The London School of Economics. He has served on various marketing and research committees of associations in the banking, mutual fund and financial planning industries. In addition he has served on the boards of both profit and non profit corporations.

Neal E. Sullivan
Neal Sullivan is the Administrative Partner of the Washington office of Bingham Dana where he conducts a general securities regulatory and litigation practice. He regularly represents clients before the SEC, NASDR, NASDAQ, NYSE, and state securities agencies and maintains a particular focus on broker-dealer and investment adviser matters. He regularly advises online and direct access broker-dealer clients on issues as best execution, payment for order flow, and regulatory and enforcement inquiries. Sullivan represents ATS broker-dealers with the regulatory registration process and market linkage issues. In addition, he has extensive experience with private and public investigations and enforcement proceedings brought by the SEC, NASDR, and state agencies.

Sullivan is also the former Executive Director of the North American Securities Administrators’ Association, former Vice President, Regulation, Boston Stock Exchange (BSE), and former Chief, Massachusetts Securities Division.

Boston University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, Certified Financial Planner™ and marks. CFP® certification is granted solely by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to individuals who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met ethics, experience and examination requirements.
