The certificate program for Community Interpreting is for multilingual professionals who are able to speak, read, and write English and Chinese, Portuguese, or Spanish fluently. Community interpreting is a broad and flexible field, encompassing work in education, social services, industry, public relations, and local government issues and affairs. Students will be introduced to the vocabulary used in these environments.
As a community interpreter, you're in a position to facilitate access to legal, educational, medical, and social services. You'll be qualified to work for state agencies, municipal agencies, non-governmental organizations, neighborhood clinics, investigators, union representatives, advertising firms, news media, and police departments. Often, community interpreters develop a network of private clients within the language community they serve.
The Community Interpreting certificate program consists of an entrance test, four required courses, and an optional internship.
